Year of the Rat

2010 is the Year of the Tiger in Chinese Astrology. The Tiger year starts on February 14th. It is year 4708.

"The Tiger is formidable. She has a substantial ego. She enjoys her status in the jungle. As a symbol, she is know for being a go-getter, a 'fast cat'. She has stamina, stregth and a power for overcoming. She can also be a 'paper tiger' without much weight or substance if her ego has been denied.

"Ignore the Tiger and you have the proverbial, "tiger by the tail; you know you are in for a tussle.

"She's a presence to be reckoned with. You will not ignore her lightly. If you want to tame her, 'handle her', ignoring her will cause her to act in one of two ways. She will roar and demand the attention due her, or she'll sulk and get depressed.

"The Tiger is proud and displays leadership in the jungle. If the ego is not acknowleged and the Tiger not granted its status, it has little reason for living. It tends to be sad and melancholy. It's days are gray no mater how brightly the sun is shiing.

"The Tiger needs the limelight. She needs to be the center of attention. She enjoys having everyone pay court and tell her how wonderful she is. But she gives as much as she receives. She has a tremendous capacity to open up the largesse within her and give to her adoring throng.

"When she's in her element, the Tiger feels alive and the sun shines brightly. When she's being ignored, or her ego has been stepped on and her natural telnts not appreciated, she can feel dead inside - whereupon she puts on a mask of compliance and slowly fades away...

"The Lung is the organ and acupuncture meridian that takes the focus of the Tiger's energy. The Tiger needs to have a healthy ego and feel inspired and enthusiastic about life. When that does not happen, the Tiger can feel dead inside and depressioin can ensure. Some Tigers have a low grade depression continually that is hard for them to shake. When we are depressed we tend to breathe shallowly and the lungs get used to being in this shallow state.

"I am alive" is the Tiger's affirmation. The Tiger can close down and become grief stricken over life's challenges. The depression that results can lead the Tiger down a long, lonely road. To find a reason for living again - to feel the life surging back into the body - is the Tiger's quest. No matter what year you were born, there is Tiger energy somewhere in your chart:

Aries...have Tigers as siblings and the one after him/her in particular. They also have teachers and mentors who are Tigers.

Taurus...makes money with Tigers. Taureans usually have the seed money, and Tigers are usually good at seeing the potential of a good deal without a lot of sentimentality.

Gemini.....is Tiger energy, and they have dad's mom and mom's dad as Tiger energy too. They learn what it is to be a Tiger thru them.

Cancer...can have a Tiger as a stepfather, and sometimes a Tiger therapist can be quite effective to cull the wheat from the chaff and help the Cancerian see beyond the emotion of any given situation.

Leo... has Tigers as friends and those who can help him/her attain her hopes and ambitions.

Virgo...has Tigers for dads and CEO types. Virgo is a mental sign, so Virgo should get along with him.

Libra...has spiritual mentors and sports coaches as Tigers. This is also the place of the 3rd child. Librans generally get along with these people, because they have an intellectual affinity.

Scorpio...makes money with Tigers.

Sag...usually marry Tigers...or someone with Tiger energy in some form in their chart. Both like to travel and get outta town frequently. Mom's mom and Dad's Dad tend to be Tigers as well as their second child.

Capricorn...have Tigers for employers or workmates. Tigers get the ideas and Capricorns are good at manifesting ideas into reality. Cap can have a Tiger as a step mom too.

Aquarius...have Tigers as kids and the first one in particular. These two usually get along very well, for they both think more than feel.

Pisces...have Tigers for mothers. Emotional for the most part, Pisceans have a mom who has more of an intellectual bent, and sometimes it's hard for the two to relate.

In more traditional Chinese Astrology you are told not to marry someone of the opposite sign, which in this case, is The Sheep. But when you overlap the Chinese chart over the western astrology chart, it becomes obvious, since the 7th house represents mate, and The Monkey is the seventh animal from the Tiger, that the Tiger will be drawn to The Monkey, and vice verse.....even if in Chinese terms, they shouldn't!!

So, Tiger, don't write someone off who's a potential mate, just because they are a Monkey, or a Sag (which is Monkey energy). More often you marry the animal energy that's opposite that at the time of your birth, which is more reflective of your personally; but the Monkey is part of the picture. A person may not be born in that year, but their, month, day or hour animal may be that energy or they can have a lot of planets in that area. After awhile you'll be able to recognize just who represents the energy and who doesn't.

In some books, the Tiger isn't attributed to Gemini. I was told by someone who knows that the Chinese use the animals as predictors of business and what's in store for the year ahead, they didn't use it for personality types, until those of us in the west were interested in it. So, there are at least 3 different interpretations out there of how to assign the animals to the astrological signs. Since I'm a student of acupuncture, and the 5 element system, and the Time of Day Wheel, I looked at the fact that in the fable, the Rat came first to the Buddha and the rest followed. Western astrology starts with Aries, and when you put the two together from an energy point of view, they come together very well. When you look at the organ of the body and the animal and the monthly astrological sign, it's just to uncanny. So, mine may be different than other books, but it has its foundation in the 5 element system on which acupuncture is based.

In the year ahead, you'll find that the area where your Ox energy is located, is where and whom you'll deal with this year.

Sometimes I'll be going too fast on a short interpretation offered and will look at the Year, and say someone was born in the Year of the Dog, let's say, when they were born in early January in the Year of the Dog. But, this isn't cut and dried. You aren't a Rooster on one day and a Dog the next. People born at that time are shapeshifting into the next sign. So by January the Rooster characteristics are giving way to the Dog; it would be like a Dog with a little look of the Rooster left. This applies to all birthdates at the beginning of the year before the next Chinese New Year takes place.
